Hair Extensions

So you want longer, fuller hair but you’re worried about extensions. That’s understandable, as we’ve all seen and heard the horror stories of hair extensions gone wrong, so of course you have your concerns. Fear not, because you’ve come to the right place. With Suisse Natural Hair Extensions you can achieve added length and fullness without damaging your own hair, while also allowing your natural hair to grow longer and healthier in the process. But first, let’s identify the reasons why so many extension techniques can be damaging.

Types of Hair – What’s Good, What’s Bad, & What’s The Difference?

Hair used for extensions comes from many different places and in many different qualities. Apart from the application technique, the quality of the extension hair will also determine whether or not they will look natural, and how long they will last. Please Note: The following statements on hair quality are meant as a guide only and are relevant to matching the strands of Caucasian hair types.

Synthetic = Bad Hair.

Synthetic hair is basically plastic, and using this type of “hair” will never look natural. It may be a lot less expensive, but you won’t be satisfied with the results. Not only will it look fake even to the untrained eye, it won’t feel or behave like natural human hair.

“European Quality” Hair = Beware

Ever gone to a deli and seen “seafood salad” on the menu? Ever wonder why it’s less expensive than raw crab meat? That’s because it’s actually white fish that’s been pulverized and dyed to look like crab meat. It’s simply a lesser quality product disguised to look like a higher quality product. This kind of deception presents itself in many options we have as consumers, from “designer impostor” colognes to “microfiber” sofas. It is common knowledge in the hair care profession that European Hair is of superior quality and so, unfortunately for those who are not as informed, “European Quality” hair has found it’s way into the marketplace.

European Hair

This hair mostly comes from southern Italy and Spain is usually grown very dark. Some is naturally straight, some is naturally wavy. European Hair is what most salons use for extensions because European hair is durable, and can last up to a year if properly maintained. European hair starts off very dark, has its color stripped, and is then re-tinted. For example, if you want platinum blonde hair extensions, the hair will go through an intensive chemical process in order to get to that color. Therefore the main disadvantage of this processing is the inability to change your color. Due to the chemical process the hair goes through, adding hair color on top of it will cause the hair to break down and fall apart. So, when using this hair for extensions, choosing the right hair color is imperative.

Virgin Hair (from Russia)

Sellers of Russian virgin hair claim that this hair is second to none, but is it really, or is it just marketing and hype?  Many long term industry hair traders have expressed the opinion that unless there is a paper trail to absolutely prove its authenticity, then there is a slim chance that it is. Many years ago before Russia and Poland were modernized, hair from these locations were more readily available. As communism fell, natives of these two countries started cutting, coloring and chemically treating their hair which rendered it no longer “virgin” hair. However, according to some Russian hair dealers, this hair has been grown by the same families for generations specifically to be cut and sold. So, if the dealer is reputable, has the paperwork confirming the hair has never been chemically treated in any way, this hair is much better suited for extensions, coloring and perming.

*Note – In order to meet the standards of US Customs, all hair imported into the United States must be boiled and processed. Which means the hair is technically no longer 100% “virgin” since it has been treated for importation. Even though this sterilization process takes place, the hair industry still refers to the product as “virgin hair”.

Wefts – Hand Made or Machine Made?

What is a weft? A weft looks like a small curtain of hair attached together at the top. Wefts can be made by machine, but the best wefts are handmade. The benefit of having them handmade is that you can match your own hair color perfectly as the color can be blended in the making process.

Machine made wefts are made from the lesser quality hair, come in continuous widths and are then cut to size. Handmade wefts are more expensive because they’re custom made to fit your head perfectly are thicker, and will last much longer if taken care of properly. Very rarely will you find premium quality hair used in machine made wefts, so if it’s quality you seek, handmade is the only way to go.

How Are Hair Extensions Applied?

The attachment process for extensions all depends on the stylist’s technique. Suisse Natural Hair Salon’s unconventional “invisible attachment” technique is unique in that it is performed without the use of weaving, heat fusing, gluing, or clamping. For more information on Suisse’s superior, non-damaging technique, click the following link Suisse Natural Hair Extensions.

Individual Strand Extensions (just say no) The Individual method involves taking small amounts (maybe 20-50 strands) of natural or synthetic extension hair and applying it to small sections of your own hair by either weaving in, heat fusing, gluing, clamping with metal rods or using waxes and polymers. All of these methods (except for the clamping which is self explanatory) involve coating your own hair with a chemical or foreign substance. These extensions usually only last a few months before they have to be taken out and completely re-done. The main problem with this method is taking the Hair Extensions out without damaging your own hair. We find it appalling to think of what might happen to your  hair if you melt some plastic, glue or clamp something to it.  *Suisse Natural Hair Salon does not endorse any type of hair extension methods other than Suisse’s own “invisible attachment” technique.

How To Care For Natural Hair Extensions

Suisse Natural Hair Extensions are made of 100% human hair, therefor treat them as if you grew the hair yourself. It is important however to make sure you are conditioning regularly to keep the extensions from become too dry. Because the hair is not actually growing out of your scalp, your bodies nutrients and oil are not flowing through the extensions. Suisse Natural Hair Salon carries advanced hair care products designed to replicate this natural process. By following the instructions of a Suisse hair care expert, you’ll be able to keep your extensions looking healthy and beautiful for as long as you wear them.

  1. Wash, condition and MOISTURIZE (very important) your hair every 2 – 3 days. Remember, the extensions do not receive your natural scalp oils, so be sure to add moisturizing conditioner after every wash. If you don’t moisturize your hair extensions they will become brittle and break easily.
  2. Like your own naturally growing hair, treat your extensions with love respect. Hair extensions will not grow back if you yank and tug on them with a brush, burn them with a curler or blow dryer. Do not attempt to color your extensions or treat them with any chemicals.
  3. Always brush out all knots before you wash your hair, swim, or sleep. Start at the bottom and work your way up slowly using a paddle brush. Suisse Natural Hair Salon carries brushes specially designed to help make this process easy and enjoyable.
  4. After about 6-8 weeks your own hair will have grown about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. At this time it is recommend that you have the extensions removed, re-conditioned, and reattached by a Suisse hair care expert.

How Long Can Extensions Be?

Suisse Natural Hair Salon does not recommend attaching hair extensions longer than 18″ (which is our most popular length), anything longer than this adds extra weight on your scalp which may lead to uneven pressure and damage to your own hair. Hair extensions are available up to 30″, however natural hair this length is usually 8 – 10 years old at the ends (average time it takes for donor to actually grow it) and so loses quality.

Can I wear an up-do with hair extensions?

Yes! Suisse’s “invisible attachment” technique allows you to wear pigtails, ponytails, french twists, french braids, whatever you want, the extensions blend right in.

Does the process hurt? Will it pull my hair out?

No, absolutely not. Suisse Natural Hair Salon focuses primarily on treatments for people with thin, weak, or damaged hair. Our goal is always to produce a natural looking head of hair that is both safe to wear and affordable to maintain. During your consultation with a Suisse Integration and Extension expert, all the information needed to produce a healthy, beautiful head of hair will be obtained.
