An Interview with Hair Replacement Specialist, Sarah Deutsch of Suisse Natural Hair Salon

HEALTH IS LESS SHROUDED IN SECRECY

Another trend noted by local experts is that women today are more willing to talk about health issues than they were in the past. Sarah Deutsch, owner of Suisse Natural Hair Salon, which specializes in hair integration, says today hair loss isn’t hidden the way it was in the past. “Before when a client came in for hair replacement it was confidential, they didn’t want anyone to know,” she says. “Now I have clients introduce me to their friends. That never happened before.”

Women make up 40 percent of the people in this country who are losing their hair, according to the American Hair Loss Association. Many times hair loss in women can be caused not only by genetic factors, but also by health factors, such as autoimmune conditions such as Lupus or by treatment with certain medications, says the American Academy of Dermatology. Deutsch estimates that as many as 40 percent of her clients have some type of medication-induced hair loss. “Women will notice that once she starts taking medication, her hair starts thinning,” says Deutsch.

Many are referred to her by their dermatologists. perhaps one of the reasons they are more willing to discuss their hair loss with others is because they understand this is a health-related issue, she says. Fixing the problem helps give them their confidence back. “Women are less in denial, and they are ready to do it,” says Deutsch.
