Managing Your New Hair

Congratulations! You made the call and finally did something about your hair loss.

Ok, so now you have a beautiful, full head of hair again, but it’s been so long since you had this much hair that you’re not sure where to start when it comes to managing and styling it on your own. No need to worry, follow these simple steps and you’ll have no problem at all getting everything you ever wanted out of your new head of hair!

• Shampooing Your New Hair

Shampooing is the first step in keeping your new hair clean, healthy and manageable, however, if you don’t use the right shampoo and technique, shampooing could cause damage to your new hair. If possible, always choose a shampoo with natural ingredients, shampoo for color treated hair is also recommended to help preserve the color of your new hair.  The general rule to shampooing is to only do it when you need it (1-2 times per week at most). Excessive shampooing presents the risk of drying out your hair, causing damage and even hair loss!

Because your newly added hair isn’t actually growing out of your scalp, the oils that your body produces naturally aren’t flowing through these hairs and causing build up as much as your naturally growing hair. So when shampooing, concentrate most of the scrubbing on your natural hair around the system while only patting suds lightly on the the hair of the system.

• Safe, Do-It-Yourself Tips

Simple, safe and effective tips that every person wearing a hair replacement system or hair extensions can use to get minor hair tangles out.

If your hair gets tangled up, it means you’ll have to spend unnecessary time detangling which also could lead to damage, and if you’re detangling your hair the wrong way you may inadvertently be diminishing the condition and life span of your new hair. Remember how badly you wanted to have a full head of hair again? Well, you have it now, so take good care of it and it will take great care of you! Always be gentle, especially if it’s been several weeks since your last full service.

It’s best to detangle your hair before getting into the shower. Begin by gently brushing all the hairs toward the same direction. Doing this before getting your hair wet will help to keep your hair from getting tangled while washing. If your hair does get tangled in the shower it helps to dilute your shampoo with just a little bit of water before applying. Using a wide-tooth comb or a specially designed vent brush will make brushing a lot easier. All of the hair products needed to maintain your hair system or hair extensions are available at Suisse.

• Conditioning Your New Hair

First off, it’s also recommended that you choose a conditioner with natural ingredients and or a conditioner with color preserving ingredients. If you’re purchasing hair conditioner from a source other than the salon, make sure to read the ingredients. To assure a prolonged, healthy head of hair and to extend the life of your hair system, avoid conditioners with these damaging ingredients.

Conditioning your hair more often than shampooing will help to keep your new hair soft and manageable between salon visits. However, don’t over do it, as applying too much conditioner to your hair can cause build up and also weaken the hairs of your system. A good way to approach conditioning is to squeeze no more than a quarter sized dot of conditioner into the palm of your hand. Rub the conditioner between both hands and blend the conditioner into your naturally growing hair.  As you work the conditioner into the naturally growing hair gently make your way up to where the hair system is attached and pad the conditioner on top of your hair system. With warm or cool water, (never hot) thoroughly rinse the conditioner out of your hair while running your fingers through the length of it right down to to tips. Repeat this step if you experience any small tangles. Avoid applying a large amount of conditioner directly to your hair system. By following these simple steps, you will be able to manage and style your hair with ease while also extending the life of your hair system.
